The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative (NSCI) has issued a statement expressing concern over recent criticism directed at the Minister of State for Defense, Mohammad Bello Matawalle, and urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to retain him in the cabinet.
In a statement released by its Convener, Yerima Shettima, the organization stated that negative commentary regarding the minister has increased following the resignation of former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. The NSCI characterized these criticisms as politically motivated attempts to undermine the administration’s support in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Shettima, the Ministry of State for Defense under Matawalle’s tenure has undertaken initiatives addressing security challenges and working toward peace restoration in communities across the North. The group asserted that the minister’s work in the security sector has gained recognition within the region.
The NSCI suggested that efforts to discredit Matawalle may be part of a wider strategy to create internal divisions within the administration and weaken the President’s political standing. The organization argued that the minister’s removal could potentially destabilize the relationship between the Presidency and Northern constituencies.
“These attacks appear to be politically motivated rather than serving regional or national interests,” the statement noted. “The minister has maintained support for the administration, and continued confidence in his role is important for stability.”
The group called on President Tinubu to maintain his support for the minister despite the criticisms. It also appealed to media organizations and the public to exercise due diligence in verifying information before publication to prevent the spread of unsubstantiated claims about public officials.
With the approaching election cycle, the organization emphasized the importance of maintaining unity. Shettima stated that Northern Nigeria’s effectiveness depends on collective cohesion and urged regional stakeholders to resist divisive influences.
The NSCI concluded by reaffirming its support for the President’s administration and its commitment to national interest and governmental stability.
